With the Menschen EP, Mike S. delivers a work rooted in the club, yet emotionally far beyond it. The title track Menschen, created in collaboration with Sorí, combines precisely crafted, functional techno with a voice that resonates both lyrically and sonically. It unfolds over a reduced yet driving groove, carried by a beautifully modulated 303 line that moves like a loop of thought through the track. No aggressive acid gestures, but detailed contours. The Menschen EP is not an overproduced statement and certainly not a pose. It is a clear, techno-driven reflection on the now.
With Menschen, Mike S. —aka Chris Maico Schmidt—reconnects with his musical roots, without falling into nostalgia. The interplay of sound and intention, function and depth, has always shaped his output—only the tools have changed. In the early 1990s, Schmidt was part of Cybordelics, releasing Adventures of Dama, one of the most formative techno tracks of the time—not a rave anthem, but an atmospheric declaration. At the same time, he also released as Mikerobenics, including the track Julika—melodic not in sentiment, but in structure.
Today, Schmidt continues this duality: as Chris Maico Schmidt, he explores more melodic, expansive terrain; as Mike S., the sound becomes faster, sharper, more functional. Menschen is both reduced and loaded—technoid and profound.
