Los Angeles-based Pollinator creates urban breakbeat soundscapes in his music. His sounds feature emergent breaks, UKG, grime, bass, jungle, and techno from a 90s-2000s LA DIY rave and graffiti culture perspective. With big wimpy beats, grimy basslines, timeless melodies, psychedelic soundscapes, and humor with a side of ratchet, Pollinator brings people together across cultures in the underground music community.
Pollinator’s self-titled EP shows both skill in the studio and a curated sound ready to present to the world in his debut productions. ‘Moonies’ gives minimal breaks meets dub medley, with quirky atmospheric vocals echoing tripped out affection for the moon. The 8-bit low dub bass synth creates a retro element, and the psychedelic effects amplify alongside the synth leads to creating a darkly grooving texture and exciting ear candy for listening. Pollinator’s breaks rhythm throughout keeps this entire track rhythmically exciting from start to finish.
‘Sandy the Cactus’ presents a perfect partner to ‘Moonies’, with intricate minimal dub breaks in the sound design. Pollinator finds a clear and easy balance between the dark and the light in this track, with playful rhythms in his synth and drum parts, and bouncing / groovy leads. A hypnotic and low dub bass line carries throughout, while little additions here and there of rhythmic and ethereal vocals bring the sound stage to full tilt.
