Australian artist Tonelab takes you on a strange and otherwordly minimal journey with his first Wulfpack release — The Babbler EP. This release features 2 original tracks and 3 remixes from Jay Tripwire (CA), Thankyou City (AUS), and Timmus (AUS).
Tonelab’s title track, “The Babbler”, demonstrates mastery over the concept of “less is more”. The track is reminiscent of artists such as Maetrik with its distinctly analog feel. The Babbler delights in its strange FX, rhythmic vocals, and tiny glitches, blips, and tweaks–giving you little touches of samples and synths in its musical conversation, and experimenting at every twist and turn. In his remix for “The Babbler”, fellow Australian artist Timmus adopts a shuffling rhythm and introduces a more angular jazzy concept to the track. His addition of the dreamy synth melody (from featured artist Dylan Jà) in the breakdown brings a touch of beauty to the peculiar. Tonelab’s second original track on The Babbler is “Spook Hill”. Spook Hill strikes a captivating balance between the strange and melodic, with a beautiful arpeggiated synth line that pans through the sonic field, dreamy angular tones, and eerie FX adding swing and evolution. Spook Hill is beautiful and absorbing to listen to with its mysterious energy. In his remix, Canadian artist Jay Tripwire adds his trademark “dubby” style to the track with minimal drums, a rolling bassline, swelling atmospheric sounds, and an easy off-beat bass synth tone that creates the perfect swing to the track’s groove. A master at work, his FX and other minimal touches evolve throughout in a way that’s mesmerizing and intriguing from start to finish. In contrast, fellow Australian artist duo Thankyou City lend a melodic interpretation to “Spook Hill”, adding jazzy piano chords and rhythmic vocals to the track’s eerie synths and arpeggiations. In the style of this entire release, their remix has a beautiful analog touch with the addition of the raw piano.
