Tokyo-based Yuu Udagawa inspired by a diverse range of genres, including Nu-Jazz, Krautrock, Hip- Hop, Minimal House, Detroit, and Electronica, is continuously exploring a unique style that captivates a broad audience. Her profound love for the sounds of analog synthesizers breathes an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere into her electronic sound. Her music offers a captivating fusion of uplifting and soothing elements, embodying Aristotle’s philosophy of the golden mean, which she adopts in her endeavor to contribute to society.
Yuu, who studied art and philosophy in high school, has since performed at clubs, festivals, and fashion shows and is now a regular in the lounges of five-star hotels like the Park Hyatt Tokyo, showcasing her versatility as a DJ. Drawing on her insights and extensive experience in creating musical atmospheres in various spaces, she continues expanding her musical creation journey.
In 2010, she composed “Blossom,” the main menu BGM for Sony PlayStation 3 (Torne and Vita), captivating gamers. After that, she released several tracks for various projects. In 2021, her music caught the eye of German artist Manuel Tur, leading to her music being released through prestigious labels such as Compost Records in Munich, Germany, Cyphon Recordings in London, founded by Jimpster and Tom Roberts, to the up-and-coming Cosmocities Records in Dijon, France, and the popular Razer- N-Tape in Brooklyn, USA. These collaborations have boosted her international visibility. She was invited by Freerange Records in London to deliver a DJ MIX on Apple Music to celebrate International Women’s Day 2024.
Beyond music, Yuu creates immersive soundscapes for various spatial environments, such as museums, installations, spas and aquariums. Her portfolio boasts remarkable achievements producing 7.1 channel surround sound for 3D hologram theatres. One of her notable works is her sound installation ‘Water Crest’, an immersive audio experience by Sony’s 360 Reality Audio, which was exhibited in Japan’s first immersive museum, which featured masterpieces by Monet, Degas, and other Impressionists and drew in 170,000 visitors.
About Manuel Tur
Born to a German mother and Ibicencan father, Manuel Tur began writing and recording his own music as a teenager. Inspired by the wave of emerging sample-based house music coming out of France in the late 1990s, he quickly taught himself how to chop up obscure disco samples from the internet in simple computer programs, leading to his first release on London label Mada Music in 2002 at the age of 16.
With a series of records on smaller labels in the US and Europe, Manuel continued to develop his craft as a beatmaker. In 2007, he was finally signed to leading UK deep house label Freerange Records for his first EP, as well as Compost Records with studio partner Dplay. The duo’s underground hit “Deviate” on Zurich’s Drumpoet Community caused a stir in the scene in 2008, earning them nominations for Best Deep House Artist and Best Track at the Ibiza DJ and Beatport Awards.
The following year, Manuel honed his craft as a fully-fledged music producer on his debut album “0201”. Accompanied by remixes from childhood heroes Pepe Bradock and Ian Pooley, the album earned him rave reviews in the media and made it onto numerous year-end lists.
While founding his own label Mild Pitch with partners Dplay and Langenberg, Manuel manifested his status as an in-demand DJ around the globe with gigs at clubs such as Robert Johnson, Fabric, Space and Panoramabar.
In 2012, shortly after Manuel’s second album “Swans Reflecting Elephants” was released and work had already begun on the follow-up “Es Cub”, the producer had to take a step back due to health issues, forcing him to find a role in the music industry that was even more studio-centered, Manuel’s natural habitat anyway. Without the obligation to travel as much, Manuel felt just as comfortable behind the desk for up-and-coming artists like André Hommen, whose “Battery Park” on Dennis Ferrer’s Objektivity label became a crossover summer hit in 2015, as well as for established artists like Virgil Abloh, Tensnake or Tale of Us.
His collaborative work in projects like Clavis, Ribn, Class Compliance or Amberoom has been released on iconic labels like Ovum, Innervisions, Poker Flat, Mule Musiq and Crosstown Rebels as well as on a new generation of fresh imprints like TAU or Isolate.
As a remixer, Manuel has reworked the music of artists such as Jazzanova, Solomun, Chaka Khan, Dennis Ferrer, Ane Brun, Skylark, Nick Holder, Boris Dlugosch & Roisin Murphy, while he himself has received the remix treatment from legendary producers such as Isolée, King Britt, Pepe Bradock, Ian Pooley, Jimpster, Stimming and Steve Bug.
As the Covid pandemic caused a tectonic shift in the music industry, Manuel began working on his own music again in 2020, leading to new solo releases on Running Back, Lossless, and his own new label Spaced Repetitions, as well as a return to Drumpoet and Freerange with “Love Me Well” in 2022.
His second release on Spaced Repetitions, “Soft Clip EP”, quickly became another crossover success, making it into the bags of DJs as diverse as Keinemusik, Ben UFO, Âme or Axel Boman, while being included in Bonobo’s curated playlist on Spotify and selected by Benji B for his “Best of 2023” mixtape on BBC Radio One.
