Spain and Italy close recently re-opened nightclubs

Videos showing prominent DJs playing for packed crowds are at the center of the debate.

Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases once more in Spain and Italy, their respective governments have taken the decision to close nightclubs again, after only after just allowing them to reopen some days ago.

On August 14th, Salvador Illa, Spain’s Minister of Health, announced that clubs would be closing again to prevent further spread of COVID-19, and all bars have been given a new 1:00 AM curfew. All those who organize illegal gatherings will be fined. Italy followed suit on August 17th, announcing that its clubs would be closed until at least early September.

Italy has been in the eye of the storm lately on social media, following the circulation of videos showing packed crowds partying with Charlotte de Witte, Nina Kraviz, and Adam Beyer, among other DJs. Italy’s updated, confirmed COVID-19 case count tallies have more than doubled in the past three weeks. Now, the use of masks is mandatory between the hours of 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM in all areas surrounding clubs and bars.
