Spotify and Universal Music Group have announced new licensing agreements that will allow Spotify users to create AI-powered covers and remixes using songs from participating artists and songwriters. The initiative introduces a licensed framework designed around artist consent, attribution, and revenue sharing.

According to the companies, the new creation tool will launch as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers, opening additional monetization opportunities for artists and songwriters while creating new discovery pathways for fans. The platform will support fan-made reinterpretations generated through responsible AI technology integrated directly into Spotify.

Spotify Co-CEO Alex Norström described the project as a continuation of the company’s long-term focus on solving structural challenges within music. At the same time, UMG Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge emphasized the importance of maintaining an artist-centric approach as AI tools become more integrated into the industry.

The move marks one of the most significant partnerships to date between a major streaming platform and a global music company focused specifically on licensed generative AI music creation.
