Spotify offers more exposure to musicians in exchange for a promotional royalty

The streaming platform announces a new tool.

Spotify has put a new option on the table. The music platform provides the ability to influence the algorithm in favor of users if artists wish to assign a promotional royalty rate; that is, they would receive a lower payment if their reproduction is recommendation-based. The function is not applicable to playlists.

The option offered by the streaming giant is to send a relevant track to listeners through automatic playback, however, the company does not ensure that more views are obtained in all cases. ‘We only recommend music that we think listeners will want to hear’, they explained.

Spotify is already under the scrutiny of the music industry due to the royalty rate, which has been a reason for complaints and requests to the brand to increase the payment to global artists and clarify their contracts. The company indicates that ‘the tool is accessible to artists at any stage of their careers’ so that for some artists it could be beneficial if they receive a significant increase in their audience in return. The results cannot be predicted, but what is certain is that the option will be much talked about.
