Spotify reintroduces direct messaging as artists protest platform

Spotify has launched a new in-app direct messaging feature for both Free and Premium users. The tool will begin rolling out this week in select markets.

Spotify’s new messaging system allows users to send and receive messages within the app, though the company has not clarified whether artists will be able to communicate directly with listeners. Conversations will be protected by industry-standard encryption and users will have the ability to block accounts, reject message requests, and report unwanted content. Spotify also plans to scan for “certain unlawful and harmful content” as part of its moderation policy.

This is not Spotify’s first attempt at in-app messaging. A previous version was removed in 2017 due to limited user engagement. Since then, the platform has seen significant growth, reporting 696 million monthly active users in Q2 2025.

The move comes as Spotify faces criticism from artists and labels reacting to CEO Daniel Ek’s financial ties to defense tech company Helsing. Among those who have removed their music from the platform are Kalahari Oyster Cult, Xiu Xiu, Hotline TNT, and Deerhoof, with the first exit taking place in June.
