In this conversation, Stella Bossi opens up about the creative process behind ‘Say What You Want’, the concept driving her new EP, and how her personality and work converge in today’s digital world.

EG: Hi, Stella! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you right now?

Stella Bossi: Thank you for having me; the pleasure is on my side. I’m good so far, many things going on, summer season ahead, and EP just released – super excited and couldn’t be happier for all the upcoming things. Right now, I’m in Berlin preparing for my weekend shows in Istanbul and London.

EG: First of all, congratulations on the recent release of your latest single, ‘Say What You Want’! You must be stoked to have this one out. What has the initial reception been like?

Stella Bossi: Super stoked. It was such a long way to get where I wanted to be. As a touring artist, you barely find time to go to the studio. But last year I blocked time for making music and got some serious output with my writer. The receptions for now are dope. People love the track. Streaming-wise and on the dance floor. I’m super happy and thankful.

EG: ‘Say What You Want’ is obviously a powerful message. What can your fans expect to find on this one? How did it come about? Did you have a clear idea before you got started on it?

Stella Bossi: I mean, I sat down with my writing partner and talked to him about my past, present, and future things that are going on. We talked for hours and came up with some catch phrases, some mantras, some basic principles of my life, and formulated some rough ideas. At some point, it went perpetually, the ideas just didn’t stop – it’s the best thing to have the same vibe with creative people. That day, after we got back to the studio and put together what belonged together, and from that point on, we worked on the EP for about four months. Now I’m super happy with my music. As said, it was a long way to get to this point to be able to really let people get close to my inner thoughts and feelings.

EG: We know that ‘Say What You Want’ is a part of your new ‘All You Can Eat’ EP. What’s the record about on a grander scale? Is there a thread or concept running across the EP?

Stella Bossi: Indeed. It’s a journey through everything that I experienced in the past decades. It starts with a deja-vu with my first club experiences and goes on with the ups and downs of life. You can wonderfully process experiences, happenings, basically your life, through art. For me, it’s therapy, it’s super energetic music, it’s a party, and for some other,s it’s just annoying music – but in the end, it’s me.

“Stella Bossi isn’t a fictional or constructed personality. It is a part of me, reflecting a certain aspect of my character”

EG: Obviously, you’re one of the most unique social media presences in our industry. How do these ideas come about, and how much work goes into their production?

Stella Bossi: First, thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate that. My ideas always come relatively spontaneously. Whether in the shower or while taking a walk, they come whenever they want. As soon as they pop up, I write them down. 99% of the time I think to myself: “You’re stupid, what’s the fucking point of that idea? You’re the only one that finds that funny…” The remaining ideas will be implemented. Some at least. The videos vary in length, I can’t really say. I don’t know…maybe from 10 minutes to weeks.

EG: How much of it is a reflection of yourself, and how much of it is a character? What’s your personal relationship with social media like?

Stella Bossi: Stella Bossi isn’t a fictional or constructed personality. It is a part of me, reflecting a certain aspect of my character. But of course, I have even more facets that I might reveal to the public someday, or perhaps never. My relationship with social media is like we all have with it. One day, super helpful. Other days, super stressful. It is what it is. I have turned off all my push notifications in order to not lose my last healthy brain cell.

EG: For many artists, their personal lives tend to “inform” their music and their relationship with music. Is this the case for you?

Stella Bossi: Sure thing.

EG: Discussing a broader picture…what do you see as the biggest challenge for artists in the near future?

Stella Bossi: Getting along with technology. You must be a damn nerd to understand the evolution of social media, AI and DSPs algorithms. Standing out with your own music, with roughly 120.000 tracks uploaded every day on Spotify is a challenge. How do you differentiate yourself?

“It was a long way to get to this point to be able to really let people get close to my inner thoughts and feelings”

EG: Looking forward, what can we expect from Stella Bossi? Where can your fans catch you next? What are your next scheduled shows?

Stella Bossi: Well, there will be a lot more music, some great collabs, and of course, now the festival season is ahead around Europe. Can’t wait for the summer and festival season to begin!

EG: Thank you so much for your time, Stella! We wish you all the best in the future. Take care!

Stella Bossi: Thank you for having me, it’s a big pleasure. Stay safe & happy.
