London-based DJ and producer Steven Julien will be the latest invited artist to mix a DJ-Kicks compilation via !K7, set for release on November 22nd, 2024
On this special occasion, his selection showcases a broad musical taste, featuring a diverse range of electronic artists and producers. Accompanying this announcement is Julien’s new single ‘Number (DJ-Kicks)’ — a percussive house track blending nostalgic dial tones with dancefloor energy.
Julien’s DJ-Kicks mix is an auditory journey from calm afternoon vibes to energetic nightlife. It begins with UK dance music history, featuring ’80s boogie and modern interpretations, before shifting to grittier sounds. These include Julien’s collaboration ‘Retriate’ and Elli’s electro track ‘Just For Me & You.’
The mix evolves to reflect Julien’s recent club experiences, balancing light and intense moments. It features tracks ranging from Chaos In The CBD’s subtle ‘Emotional Intelligence’ to Julien’s energetic ‘Number’ and Ash Lauryn’s hypnotic techno.
Describing the essence of his mix, Julien speaks of capturing an out-of-body energy — a state of pure, uninhibited expression. “When you get in that position of doing what’s true to you, playing what’s true to you,” he says, “people just resonate with that.”
Since 1995, DJ-Kicks has showcased some of dance music’s most influential artists. Julien joins this lineup with a session that combines tracks from diverse talents like Ryuichi Sakamoto, DāM-FunK, and Todd Edwards, alongside his own productions. This curation highlights the artist’s skill and musical depth.
