Drawing from her background in set design, Stein has carved out a distinct niche in the underground electronic scene. Her signature blend of aggressive rhythms and mystifying melodies has earned her acclaim through releases on Roam Recordings and Playground Records, including the EPs ‘Scenic Byway’ and ‘Mystic Saddle Ranch.’
Her latest venture, ‘Horse House’—a collaboration with Australian Lord Fascinator on Eskimo Recordings—embodies her fearless approach. This track marries galloping house beats with country-western flair, featuring everything from lonesome guitar twangs to equine snorts.
To celebrate this release, Stein has thoughtfully curated her top 10 tracks for the desert discotheque—a collection of Morricone-touched treasures and acid-laced gems spanning half a century of musical evolution.
1. Kate Stein & Lord Fascinator – Horse House (Club Edit) [2025 Eskimo Recordings]
“We never expected this track to be released, it started as a laugh while we were collaborating in a Hollywood Studio in 2023. Two years later, the hype is real, with early support from favorites DJ Harvey, Tim Sweeney, Travis Holcombe (KCRW) and Silicone Soul.“
2. The William Caslon Experience – More Close Than Opran (The Herbaliser Remix)
“I found this gem late last year and it has fast become my favorite opening track of the moment—lonesome Acid Jazz infused with a Western Downtempo feel.”
3. Sampaio, Albin, Gerra G – Mutualism (Original Mix)
“This track is a deep dig. There was a period a few years ago when I was living in LA, most weekends I was driving out to Joshua Tree, and my playlists were always guitar-infused and cowboy-esque. This track was on the list!”
4. Beyond The Struttosphere – New Frontier (Director’s Cut)
“I feel like Beyond The Struttosphere are an extremely underrated group. This track always pulls deeply at my electronic heartstrings and also soundtracked my 2020 (where I spent a lot of time outdoors under starry skies).”
5. Architectural – Good Night, Whatever That Is
“When I received the promo for this, I fell in LOVE immediately—it’s been in all of my sets over the last few months.”
6. Andry Nalin – Ring Ring (Original Telephone Cut)
“This track just doesn’t get old. Sexy, groovy, fun, and a real earworm.”
7. Curses – Pedal To The Metal And Don’t Look Back
“How can you not want to dance hearing this masterpiece?! If I were an Outlaw, this would be my theme song.”
8. Ennio Morricone – Come Maddalena (Versione 12″ maxi disco 78)
“The Granddaddy of them all.”
9. El Deux – Gletscher
“4 decades and ‘Gletscher’ has endured as a cult classic, embodying the far reaches of the post-punk, experimental and electronic landscape of Switzerland.”
10. Red Axes – Caminho De Dreyfus (Rebolledo Remix)
“One of my favorite songs of all time.”
