Lovefest is back for a very special anniversary edition from August 4th – 6th in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia. Hundreds of artists will perform across five stages, including Marco Carola, Joseph Capriati, Antal, Jamie Jones, Joe Claussel, Sonja Moonear, Kölsch, Rødhåd, Folamour, Danny Tenaglia, and more.
Joining the above names is Amsterdam native Mendel. Having bought his first record player from a Waterlooplein market at 10 years old, he is an assured selector whose sound spans house, disco, techno, and the myriad spaces between. Here he shares a classy selection from his bag ahead of the event.
Today Mendel shares 10 tracks ahead of his performance at this year’s Lovefest.
1. Paradise Inc. – Get Together Now (Dub)
‘I’ll be starting at 3 am at the Energy Stage, which is quite big, so I’m probably kicking off with some classic house tunes to get everybody involved.‘
2. Billie – True Love (Cole & Clivilles Mix)
‘Some more garage house vibes, vocals by Billie (from ‘Nobody’s Business’) and produced by Cole & Clivilles (yes, from C+C Music Factory). A real festival tune for me, poppy, high energy, open, loving. What more do you want?’
3. Spiritual Emphasi – Australis
‘Something a bit heavier to turn up the heat. Been playing almost all tracks from this Italian EP by Spiritual Emphasi, some nice deeper ones on there as well, but for this stage, I’ll go with the rattling drum computers.’
4. Salamandos – Enterprise [The World To Come]
‘If I feel like taking it up another notch… or two. Some acid won’t hurt, right? An oldie from The Hague by the one and only Legowelt.’
5. Outer Limits (Rick’s Pure Soul Remix)
‘The original version of this is a classic, but I’m really into this newer remix as well. Love all the different elements in this tune, subtle acid lines, piano, lots of percussion,s and spacey pads. A great bridge between different styles. And the song tells a story in its own right.’
6. Midnight Sky – Ron Trent
‘This probably won’t be the only Ron Trent track I’m taking. Especially on a big festival stage when the night has fallen and you want to get into some deeper territory, close your eyes and get carried away…’
7. Angela Johnson & Joe Claussell – Inclusion (The Soul Feast Cosmic Arts Dub)
‘Hasn’t left my bag since it came out last year, what a gem of a song! To connect the people and spread some love. And a little homage to Joe Claussell who is playing later that night.’
8. Ijo Ya
‘I’m a fan of the Dutch Arp Frique and band. Go see them live if you can! I’ve played this tune a lot, it features the great Orlando Julius, who sadly passed away this year. Or perhaps I’ll play another one by Arp Frique that I’ve been working on recently…’
9. Régis Tareau & K’ib – Doubout
‘Big zouk tune! To lighten up the vibe and bring some joy to the floor.’
10. Norman Connors – Take It to the Limit (12″)
‘One of my all-time greatest producers Norman Connors and the little-known (but what a voice!) Adaritha. Incredible song to expand the heart!’
