A new 20-minute documentary dives into the world of Toy Tonics, the Berlin music collective reshaping European club culture with a colorful fusion of house, art, and fashion. Directed by German filmmaker Manuel Werner, the film traces four years of the label’s evolution, from underground gatherings to international Jams and art collaborations.

Often positioned as a counterpoint to Berlin’s darker techno aesthetic, Toy Tonics offers a more inclusive, Y2K-tinged house experience. The collective’s open, phone-free parties have drawn nearly 350,000 dancers across 20 countries, including regular appearances at Panorama Bar, REX, The Jazz Cafe, and beyond. In 2025 alone, Toy Tonics hosted more than 160 events.

The documentary opens on the dancefloor, capturing the energy of a crowd that mirrors the brand’s bold identity: young creatives, art students, DIY fashion lovers, and cultural explorers. Through interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, Werner spotlights the DJs, musicians, designers, and photographers shaping Toy Tonics’ sound — a blend of italo disco, afro-funk, new wave, and neo-soul rooted in live-band influences.

The film also follows the collective’s expansion into visual arts and design, including collaborations with LN-CC during London Fashion Week, exhibitions at Palais de Tokyo and Villa Stuck, and their role as official hosts of Design Week Milano since 2023.

Founder and creative director Mathias Modica, who previously ran Gomma Records and worked with artists such as James Murphy and Peaches, sees the project as part of a larger cultural turning point: “A new generation is looking for new moods — more positive vibes, organic energy, kindness, and cultural variety. Simply more soul and open-mindedness.”

As he says in the film: “People always talk about that vibe — and it’s this human touch that we bring to it. We try to make electronic music with a very human feel.”
