Union Of Musicians has launched a campaign called ‘Justice At Spotify’, which seeks to generate changes in terms of the payment model of this platform, in order to establish more favorable conditions for artists who showcase their music on the streaming giant.
‘Spotify is the most dominant platform in the music streaming market … The company behind the streaming platform continues to accumulate value, but music workers everywhere see little more than pennies in compensation for the work they do’, indicates the organization.
On their requests, Union Of Musicians adds: ‘With the entire live music ecosystem in jeopardy due to the coronavirus pandemic, music workers are more reliant than ever on streaming revenue. We call on Spotify to deliver higher royalty payments, transparency in your practices, and to stop fighting artists’.
Among their demands, the organization requires 1 cent per song transmission (currently the payment is close to .0038 cents per transmission), as well as a user-centered payment model, and, in general terms, they demand greater transparency regarding closed-door contracts and the existing payola on the platform.
