Waajeed to open the Underground Music Academy in Detroit

The project aims to become a community music space for ‘future leaders of independent electronic music’.

Waajeed has been named the face of the Underground Music Academy, an educational project based in Detroit. Named in honor of Underground Resistance, a collective created by Mike Banks and Jeff Mills, it will have its facilities on Grand Boulevard, the same street where other outstanding projects in the city were founded. such as the Motown museum, Moodymann’s Mahogani Music label, and the Underground Resistance collective itself.

The building where the project will be installed was bought five years ago, but to get it started a considerable investment is needed, which they hope to raise throughout 2021 through a ‘crowdfunder’ that they have created on ioby.org.

Throughout this year they will develop their curriculum with a series of free tutorials for all levels that they will publish online for free. And in 2022 they plan to open their doors to a limited number of Detroit residents and a series of courses that can be followed online.

Currently, the project needs 25,809 US$ dollars and so far they have already raised more than 4,000.
