Dutch electronic duo Weval have released their fourth studio album, ‘Chorophobia’, out now on Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint. The record arrives alongside a self-directed video for their latest single, ‘Open Up That Door ft. Kilimanjaro’. Watch here.
The new album sees Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers embracing dancefloor dynamics more directly than ever before, challenging the introspective mindset that shaped previous releases like 2019’s ‘The Weight’ and 2023’s ‘Remember’. Sparked by the discovery of the term “chorophobia” — the fear of dancing — the duo leaned into its irony and let go of long-held inhibitions.
“Until that point, we had always worked on records with a ‘listening’ mindset,” says Harm. “We realised that we’ve been scared of making dance music for all of our journey as producers.” The result is their most extroverted work yet — filled with high-energy cuts, genre shifts, and bold rhythmic choices.
The album includes recent singles ‘Dopamine’, ‘Just Friends’, and ‘Movement’, with stylistic nods ranging from acid synths to funk, UK bass, and even Motown textures. Tracks like ‘Mercator’ provide a link to their earlier catalogue, while the collaboration with Kilimanjaro on ‘Head First’ adds new vocal dimensions to their sound.
Weval will support the album with a headline UK/EU tour this autumn, including a stop at Hackney Church in London.
