A Yamaha CS-80 believed to have belonged to Vangelis has sold for £401,465, setting a new record for the most expensive synthesizer ever sold.
The instrument was listed on Reverb by an Athens-based seller, who claimed that it was Vangelis’ first CS-80 and that it had been used on his 1977 album ‘Spiral’. The listing was removed following the sale.
According to the seller, the fully functional synthesizer was an early prototype and included its original stand and lid. It was described as being in excellent condition, with minimal wear and a cigarette burn on one of its keys.
The CS-80 became closely associated with Vangelis’ work, including the electronic sound worlds that defined his influential film scores and studio recordings.
