Amid recent platform controversies.

Björk has voiced strong concerns about streaming platforms’ impact on the music industry, particularly Spotify’s business model. In an interview with Swedish publication Dagens Nyheter, she argues these services have fundamentally altered both society and musical artistic expression.
The Icelandic singer-songwriter emphasized the vital role of live performances in her career while acknowledging her privileged position. Her established career allows her more freedom in choosing performance dates—a luxury many emerging artists don’t have, as they depend on touring for income.
Her criticism arrives at a contentious time for Spotify. The platform recently faced backlash when several Grammy nominees declined to attend its awards-related event, citing concerns over artist compensation. The controversy deepened when a Music Business Worldwide report revealed that Spotify’s founders, Daniel Ek, and Martin Lorentzon, earned over $932 million from share sales in 2024 alone.
Björk’s latest project, Apple Music Live: Björk, debuted on January 24th. The concert film showcases her ‘Cornucopia’ tour in Lisbon, featuring digital animations and environmental themes, with a theatrical release planned for later this year.
