He was involved in a cable car accident in Sri Lanka.
Laurentiu Gavrila, better known by his artist name Funk E, passed away after a cable car accident near Kurunegala, Sri Lanka, on September 24, 2025.
Funk E launched his musical career in Romania’s post-communist hip hop scene, first gaining recognition as a DJ before gradually shifting toward techno in the early 2000s. In 2004, he relocated to Ibiza, where he spent around twelve years shaping his electronic music identity. His long, immersive sets earned him favor among Bucharest’s after-party crowds, and his residencies at Ibiza’s Zoo Project and Underground further established his reputation on the island.
In 2015, he founded his own label, Great Empty Circle, as a platform for full creative freedom. He released music under his own name and under aliases including Bhikkhu and Marvin Gain. His work also appeared on different imprints such as Adult Only, Raum…musik, Kurbits, Pleasure Zone, and The Rabbit Hole.
In recent years, he had reportedly become a full-time Buddhist monk. According to news reports, the accident claimed the lives of multiple persons — including him — when a cable snapped mid-journey, causing the cabin to plummet. Among the victims were monks of multiple nationalities. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
