With his latest EP ‘Over’, recently released via Headroom Records, the producer leans further into that contrast, shaping a body of work from fragments that were never intended to become complete tracks.

Built from dictaphone piano recordings, sketches, and loose ideas, ‘Over’ avoids traditional structure in favor of reconstruction. Instead of refining demos into polished forms, Model Man treats them as raw material, cutting and reshaping them while preserving their imperfections. The result is a collection that moves between introspection and physicality, rooted in his background as a classically trained pianist raised alongside UK garage and rave culture.

Growing up in Chelmsford, Essex, he absorbed both discipline and spontaneity early on. That duality continues to define his sound, where piano motifs intersect with breakbeats, modular textures, and fragmented vocals. The EP itself emerged during a period of forced stillness following an injury, leading him to revisit old recordings and rework them into something new. Across the release, momentum builds gradually, favoring repetition and atmosphere over conventional peaks.

In this conversation, Model Man opens up about the origins of ‘OVER’, his creative habits, and his approach to building community.

EG: Hi, Mark! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been doing?

Model Man: I’ve been doing really well, thanks for having me.

EG: First of all, congratulations on the release of your latest EP, ‘Over’! You must still be excited to have this one out. What has the initial reception been like so far

Model Man: Yeah, the reception’s been really good. I made it quite quickly, in a sort of whimsical, lighthearted way. It’s the first time I’ve made music like that for a while, so I’m just grateful that people have listened to it and that they like it.

EG: ‘OVER’ has quite a unique backstory. What can you tell us about that? How did the idea come about?

Model Man: Well, I had a bit of a cycling injury and ended up bedridden for about two weeks. I could barely move. I had a bunch of piano recordings that I’d made a few weeks prior, and I sat with my laptop sketching things out, cutting up these little piano ideas, and making melodies. That was how the EP started.

EG: How long back do some of these samples and recordings go? Was this a project in which the passage of time and your own “evolution” played a crucial role?

Model Man: Yeah, they don’t go back super far, but I got into a habit of making piano recordings, just long improvisations in the mornings, almost every day. I did that pretty religiously for a few years. A lot of this comes from those routines and habits that I created, and that’s what really helped me.

“I just want to stay sane, keep happy, go and play snooker once a week, and make a bit of music”

EG: And what can your fans expect to find on this record, sound-wise?

Model Man: It’s a little bit more lighthearted than usual. There’s a telephone solo, for example, on the first track. And there are some samples I collected over the last few months that I found funny and amusing, which I’ve woven in.

EG: By the way, you have just started your own Discord channel, right? What can we find on there?

Model Man: Yeah, I really wanted a place where I could share demos and get other people to share their own music, art, films, or whatever else they’ve been working on. Also, for people who are just into music and art, people who want to share what they’re listening to. I wanted to create a space where people could share ideas and feel like they could get feedback. Having my own little community is something I’ve wanted to do for a few years.

EG: On to a broader subject… What would you like to accomplish as an artist this year? Is there something “tangible” that you’d like to go for?

Model Man: Honestly, I don’t have many ambitions. I just want to stay sane, keep happy, go and play snooker once a week, and make a bit of music.

EG: What are some of the challenges artists will face in the near future? What advice would you give to your colleagues? What would you like to see more and less of?

Model Man: I don’t know if I’m the best person to give advice, to be honest. I’d just say go with your gut instincts and be your true self.

EG: What’s next for Model Man? Where can your fans catch you next?

Model Man: I’m planning on doing some shows soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

EG: Thank you so much for your time, Mark! We wish you all the best in the future. Take care!

Model Man: Thank you, I really appreciate it!
