Bijan Blum, the influential German DJ best known for his residency at Frankfurt’s legendary Dorian Gray nightclub, has passed away at the age of 71.

A key figure in Germany’s club culture, Blum played the first record at Dorian Gray when the venue opened in 1978 and went on to become one of its defining residents. Across the following decades, he witnessed and helped shape the evolution of dance music culture, from disco and house to the rise of techno, influencing generations of DJs along the way.

Among those paying tribute was Sven Väth, who described Blum as one of the artists who profoundly inspired him during his formative years. In a message shared on social media, Väth recalled visiting Dorian Gray to hear Blum perform, praising his innovative use of multiple turntables, reel-to-reel edits, and his ability to build long-form musical journeys. He also highlighted his dedication to the craft, noting that he always placed the music above personal recognition.

Born in 1954 to Iranian-German parents and raised in Cologne, Blum later settled in Mannheim and remained a respected figure within Germany’s electronic music community. Beyond his work as a DJ, he also worked as a model and appeared on television.
