Burning Man unveils ‘Animalia’ theme for 2023

Celebrating “the animal world and our place in it”.

Burning Man has just announced its theme for next year’s edition of the gathering. Under the concept of ‘Animalia’, the new theme will pay respects to the animal kingdom. The announcement was made official by the event’s resident and director of Burning Man Project’s Philosophical Center, Stuart Mangrum in The Burning Man Journal.

Here, Mangrum explains that ‘Animalia’ is intended to “celebrate the animal world and our place in it,” as everyone explores “animals real and imagined, mythic and remembered”.

“Anyone familiar with the high desert knows that even out on a dry lakebed, the skies carry soaring ravens and buzzing insects, the fairy shrimp slumber below ground waiting for rain, and countless other species roam the transition zones where the playa edges into scrub and wetlands,” Mangrum further explained, acknowledging the many animals that exist in the Black Rock Desert and thrive in the environment.
