Carl Cox, with his extensive 150,000-piece vinyl collection, has carefully selected his “absolute superstar” records for an art collaboration with UK photographic artist Mark Vessey.

This collaboration has culminated in a limited edition artwork titled ‘Carl.‘ The artwork is set to be unveiled at Enter Gallery in Brighton on July 20th, 2024. It offers a deeply personal glimpse into the DJ’s career and the history of dance music. From his vast vinyl collection, Cox has chosen records of profound significance.

The artwork includes tracks from a diverse array of artists such as Run DMC, Carrie Lucas, Fleetwood Mac, Duran Duran, Lil Louis, and Doug Lazy. “Every single one of these records is not a promo, I literally went to the record store and stood there and went through the music… this collection is the best of the best,” says Carl Cox.

The visual essence of this collection has been captured by Mark Vessey. Vessey meticulously curates subjects of his images, including magazines, books, and vinyl records that hold significant cultural value. His previous acclaimed works include collaborations with Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) and Simon Dunmore, founder of Defected Records.

“It has been an honor to work with Carl Cox, to have his trust and time to explore his archive. Carl Cox is unique in sewing together multiple generations through his passion for music. That passion and love have been shared and absorbed by him through his vinyl collection, each one of his vinyl holds its own piece of his story. My hope in photographing them together is that they visually reflect his love and shared history back to us,” says Mark Vessey.
