EG caught up with Dirty Sound Boys to learn more about the drop of his new single, ‘Magic’, future endeavors, and much more.
EG: Hi Jorge! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you right now?
Dirty Sound Boys: Hellooo EG family! What an honor to be here! Right now I’m in Porto, back at my home studio finishing some brand-new music for the summer season. I’ve been feeling inspired lately and I can’t wait to put out all that we’ve been cooking!!
EG: First of all, congratulations on the release of your new single, ‘Magic’. What has the initial reception/promo been like? Have you been able to test these live yet?
Dirty Sound Boys: It’s been an amazing initial reception, with so many feedback messages and support, we feel grateful that the people are enjoying ‘Magic’. Tested out at festivals and some sunsets, the crowd reaction has been insane, our tech bass sound works out pretty well for both crowds and we couldn’t be happier!!
EG: So, what can your fans expect to find on ‘Magic’? What was the writing process like? Is there a concept or emotional trigger to this track?
Dirty Sound Boys: They can find the freshness of summer, a catchy melody that will easily get stuck in your head & ears. The idea for the track came up after a surf session in Viana do Castelo. I stayed next to Cabedelo beach, surrounded by an immense sea, mother nature full of trees and dunes. One of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been in my life, it doesn’t feel like we’re in Portugal! I was in love with a beautiful woman called María, and felt inspired by her love, by the natural surroundings, by the “summer vibe”, and by the simplicity of the beauty around that place. Which motivated me to transcribe that same magical feeling of freedom coming from my heart into Ableton.
EG: This is your second release on Don Diablo’s HEXHIBITION, right? Why did you decide to go with this label for this particular release?
Dirty Sound Boys: Yes! It’s our second release on HEXHIBITION this year and not the last one! HEXAGON label manager proposed the opportunity to release ‘Magic’ and ‘Early Owl’ on Don Diablo’s house music label, so the tracks found their perfect home.
“I was in love with a beautiful woman called María, and felt inspired by her love, by the natural surroundings, by the “summer vibe”, and by the simplicity of the beauty around that place”
EG: How would you describe the ‘tech bass’ sound to anyone unfamiliar with it?
Dirty Sound Boys: Tech bass is a mixture between two stands of house music, we combine elements from tech house with modern bass house to create our signature sound. It’s been working out much better since we switched from big room to tech bass!
EG: Right now, social media seems to play a completely prominent role in the development of an artist’s career. What’s your stance on this? Is the bringing us closer than ever, or is it drawing our attention away from the actual music?
Dirty Sound Boys: The music industry has changed so much because of the socials!! Everyone can be a DJ nowadays, hahaha! Social media made it go so mainstream, everybody is able to make it into this world if they have a great team, but not everyone knows the secret to produce a summer hit.
On one side, the diversity of musical talents has been growing, but you see many producers trying to copy what others already did instead of creating something unique and fresh. So, sometimes It’s better to get some time off from social media if you do want to start something that has never been done.
EG: By the way, Summer’s here. Are you looking forward to anything in particular?
Dirty Sound Boys: Looking forward to getting some vacations out of Portugal with some friends. After being in the studio locked for so long, we almost forgot that the real world is outside that box we’re living in! Hahaha!
EG: How do you keep entertained when not in the studio? Have you recently found any good movies, books, or albums you’d recommend?
Dirty Sound Boys: I’ve always been a radical sports addict since I was young. When I’m off the studio, I love to go skateboarding, and surfing with my friends, and I also do lessons for people that want to learn. These kinds of sports inspire me and make me feel free.
Lately found some open-minded books by Paul Arden that I could recommend to everyone in this industry, so take note! ‘It’s not how good you are, It’s how good you want to be’ and the follow-up, ‘Whatever you think, think the opposite’.
“Sometimes It’s better to get some time off from social media if you do want to start something that has never been done”
EG: Can you share something personal with us only a few people know about?
Dirty Sound Boys: I got into DJing when I was around 6, or 7 years old because of my father. He was the owner of a bar in Chaves, a small city in the north of Portugal. So I first started playing with vinyl until 9 years old and later switched to the CDJs.
EG: What’s next for Dirty Sound Boys? Where can your fans catch you next? What new milestones are you looking forward to in 2023?
Dirty Sound Boys: We’ll have a gig in Porto, our hometown on July 28th, so you can catch us there! We’re gonna premiere all the new music that we’ve been working on for this season so It’s gonna be an exclusive 2…3 hours set, better don’t miss it! For 2023 and the following years I would love to tour around the world, to take our sound to the best places in the world like Mexico, Italy, Spain, and the USA of course. Can’t wait to meet all the fans from all over the globe!
EG: Thank you for your time, Jorge! We’re excited to see what’s in store for you. Take care!
Dirty Sound Boys: The pleasure was ours! Can’t wait to show you what’s coming out next, thank you so much for having us! Cheers to you all!!
