John Digweed returns to Miami during Miami Music Week with Bedrock heading out onto Biscayne Bay for a special cruise that feels perfectly suited to his style of DJing.
Across more than three decades behind the decks, the Bedrock founder has built a reputation on patience, control, and a deep instinct for how a dance floor should move over time.
For some of us, those journeys go back a long way. I still remember seeing Sasha & Digweed during the Delta Heavy tour, one of those nights that quietly reset expectations of what a DJ set could be.
His relationship with EG also runs deep. Digweed marked a milestone in the series with EG.800, delivering the kind of carefully constructed mix that has defined his career.
Now, as Bedrock prepares to set sail during Miami Music Week, we caught up with John to talk about the cruise, new music finding its way into his sets, and the instincts that continue to guide Bedrock after all these years.

EG: Hi John, great to have you with us again. You are returning to Miami for the Bedrock Cruise during Miami Music Week. What made this the right moment to finally do a Bedrock boat party in the city?
JD: Hi, thanks for the invite. It’s just never worked out in previous years with my schedule to do one of these boat parties, so looking forward to returning this year with the Bedrock crew.
EG: Bedrock has always kept its focus on new music and forward-moving producers. Recently on Transitions, you have been championing deeper and more hypnotic sounds from artists like Zuccasam, Marvio, and Thaddeus X. What has been exciting you about this direction lately?
JD: For me, it’s always been about quality music and giving exciting new artists exposure. There are so many new tracks coming out every day, so it’s hard for new artists to break through all the noise. I go through so many demos, promos, and new releases every day, sorting out what I think are the best selections for me to play out. The artists you mention, along with a whole host of rising stars, have tracks that are road-tested by me every weekend. It’s always really nice to see new talents’ careers start to take off.
EG: A boat party has its own natural flow. People board together, stay for the full ride, and experience the set as one continuous arc. Does that kind of setting change how you think about building the journey?
JD: I play according to the setting I am in. I am not a DJ who has a set that I play regardless of the time, place, or venue I am at. I think long and hard before each gig and use my years of experience to play the best I can for the crowd that’s in front of me.
EG: Miami Music Week can be intense with so many events competing for attention across the city. When deciding which shows to be part of, what usually guides that choice?
JD: I usually aim for somewhere that has a bunch of artists I want to hear play and catch up with. It doesn’t have to be a massive party, just great DJs and good people.
“I play according to the setting I am in. I am not a DJ that has a set that I play regardless of the time, place or venue.”
EG: Bedrock releases are known for being very carefully selected. When you hear a track for the first time, what usually tells you it belongs on the label?
JD: I usually need to road test a track for 2 or 3 weekends so I can see for myself that it works over many different dance floors. At the moment, the label is inundated with demos as it seems so many artists want to be on the label. Sadly, we only do 2 releases a month, so I have to be 100 percent with every release.
EG: Playing on Biscayne Bay brings a very different atmosphere compared with a club. With the skyline around you and the light shifting as the set progresses, does that environment naturally influence how you pace the music?
JD: The boat parties are always such great fun. With it being in such a different setting than normal, everyone really makes the effort to join in, have fun, and enjoy the beautiful views of the Miami waters.
EG: You receive a constant stream of new music from producers around the world. When listening to demos today, what usually makes a track stand out for you? Is it purely about production quality, or something harder to define?
JD: Harder to define, really. The tracks need to stand out from the crowd and work over a series of dance floors across the world.
EG: Spencer Brown joins you on the lineup for the cruise. What do you appreciate about what he brings to a Bedrock setting like this?
JD: I have been working with Spencer for a while, and he is such a great DJ, producer, and all-around lovely guy. He is very conscientious about his sets, so I am sure he will deliver a perfect set for everyone on board.
“People who come to our events tend to want to have fun and dance, not stand there on their phone and not bringing anything to the party.”
EG: Bedrock events are known for extended sets and careful musical storytelling. Why do you think that format still matters on dance floors today?
JD: I try to just focus on what we do and what we think works. Even after so many years of throwing parties, I think we have a good idea of how to create the right environment with great music and a great vibe on the dance floor. People who come to our events tend to want to have fun and dance, not stand there on their phone, and not bringing anything to the party.
EG: Looking ahead, what projects or releases are currently keeping you busy with Bedrock or in the studio?
JD: There are loads of stuff coming up, but due to not letting the cat out of the bag, you will have to wait like everybody else for the news to be released.
EG: Finally, for those joining the Bedrock Cruise during Miami Music Week, what kind of experience do you hope people take away when the boat returns to the dock?
JD: Smiles, memories, and good vibes.
EG: Thanks for the time, and see you on board.
