King Joshua: “Music unites people”

Born in Italy but a world citizen, King Joshua’s music has been rocking soundsystems across the coolest dance floors for years, bringing him to collaborate with many international artists in the industry, without ever looking for fame or reflector lights. Over the years he has satiated his soul of experiences, developing a passion for refined and well-defined sounds with the aim of educating his sensibility and his ear to create a musical identity for the demanding clubbers.

We caught up with King Joshua to discuss his debut livestream in Italy, his project IDOL, and new release ‘Going Back To My Roots’.

Electronic Groove: Hi Joshua, how are you doing? It’s a pleasure to have you here. Where are you based right now? What does the situation look like over there? What have you been up to during the pandemic?

King Joshua: Hi, it’s my pleasure to be Electronic Groove’s guest. At this moment, I’m in La Spezia, the Italian city where I live. During the pandemic, I’ve been focused on my passion for music, and I’ve worked on my new productions and next projects.

EG: You’ve just done a beautiful livestream from Portovenere, Italy. This was your first one since the pandemic started, right? Was there a particular reason holding you back from doing one? How different was it from crafting a set in a club setting with an audience?

King Joshua: Portovenere is an amazing place full of magic. I loved doing my set here, but there’s a lot of difference to crafting a set in a club with an audience. Music unites people, it doesn’t divide them; I really miss playing with an audience and spending time with people.

EG: Do you believe livestreams are here to stay? What does the immediate future of music look like to you right now?

King Joshua: I hope that livestreams will give way to DJ sets with an audience as soon as possible. After this period at a halt, everyone will want to hear live music, join events, and spend time with other people. I imagine the future with a lot of parties where we’re having fun and listening to music together; I see a normal life.

EG: Let’s talk a bit about your background…how did you get entangled with Electronic music? Did it take you long to figure out what kind of music you wanted to make?

King Joshua: I’ve loved electronic music since forever, I’ve been a customer on the dancefloor for many years and I started playing music because I love sharing my overwhelming passion with everyone. My sound is always evolving, I like to reach new musical destinations and I believe that my musical research will never have an end. These days, I’ve been focused on two projects: the first one is House-oriented, and the second one is more “experimental”.

“My sound is always evolving”

EG: And you’ve got an extensive relationship with Idol Records, right? How did that come about? What can we expect from that relationship in the future?

King Joshua: Idol is my most important project, the one that allowed me to have my residency in Ibiza, to meet a lot of important artists, and to make new musical productions. Idol will be in my future, but there will be other news that I can’t spoil.

EG: How would you describe yourself as a DJ? Is there a message behind your sets?

King Joshua: I’m an eclectic DJ who doesn’t like the musical classification. I like to explore every aspect of Electronic music. The message of my sets is always the love for music that I share with the people on the dancefloor. When I perform, I feel both a DJ and a clubber and I would like for the audience to perceive this synergic and energic mix.

EG: Could you tell us a bit more about your process in the studio? Have you found ‘formulas’ to your signature sound?

King Joshua: My favorite ‘formula’ is to not have one 😊 , during my studio sessions I always look for different emotions.

EG: If you had to recommend one… Which would you say is your favorite track in your bag? Why?

King Joshua: Missing – Everything But The Girl. After almost 40 years, it’s still able to ignite the dancefloor.

EG: So, what’s in store for King Joshua for the rest of the year? What can we expect from you moving forward?

King Joshua: There will be lots of news about my art projects and my new productions which are top secret at the moment 😉. I can only say to you that I hope to become a musical pilgrim soon, so I can start to travel the world, discover new cultures and play my sets worldwide.

EG: Thank you for your time Joshua! We wish you all the best! Have a great year!

King Joshua: Thank you so much to have me here and I hope to see you soon on the dancefloor.
