Matt Fax: “I wanted to use music as therapy and turn my feelings into songs”

French DJ and producer, Matt Fax, is a respected figure in the melodic house and progressive scene. With a career spanning over a decade, he has built a dedicated global fan base. In the progressive and trance circles, the artist is increasingly recognized as one of the genre’s contemporary pioneers.

Matt Fax has just released his highly-anticipated third studio album entitled ‘Story of the Fall’ via  Chromattic. The 15-track album is a blend of various electronic sub-genres, including melodic house, downtempo, bass, and hypnotic trance. It captures the essence of Matt’s 11-year journey in the melodic house and progressive scene, blending the driving energy of progressive house, emotive melodies of trance, and raw depth and punch of bass music.

Previously, Matt Fax has released music on industry-leading labels such as Enhanced, Colorize, Anjuna, and Armada. At just 27 years of age, he has already achieved an impressive list of career milestones, including two previous albums and the career-spanning compilation ‘X’, released in 2022.

EG interviewed Matt Fax to discuss the inspiration behind his latest album ‘Story of the Fall’ and his future projects.

EG: Hi Matt! Welcome to EG. It’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How have you been? Where are you right now?

Matt Fax: Thanks for having me, I’ve been doing good so far, currently answering the questions from my studio in between two tracks.

EG: First of all, congratulations on the release of your new studio album ‘Story Of The Fall’! You must be very excited to finally be able to share this one. What has the initial reception been like?

Matt Fax: The reception has been great so far, I’m super excited to finally put this album out. It’s been a long 3 years of work coming to an end and I feel relieved now.

EG: So, what can your fans expect to find on ‘Story Of The Fall’? Is there a concept or emotional trigger to this new album?

Matt Fax: The album follows my evolution as a person and an artist over the past 3 years. It was pretty emotionally heavy at some point as I had to deal with loss, depression, and a lot of things that put me in a dark place, so I wanted to use music as therapy and turn my feelings into songs.

EG: This is your third studio LP. In which ways would you say ‘Story Of The Fall’ is different? How have you evolved as an artist since the first album?

Matt Fax: My first two albums were a collection of tracks made during a certain period. This album is a more cohesive offer, as I took time to make a tracklist that would make sense and create a story. It was quite challenging but it does give a reason for the album to exist.

EG: Where and when would you say is the perfect setting to listen to ‘Story Of The Fall’? What would you like for listeners to take away from it?

Matt Fax: I think people should listen to it at home, on their own. It’s not an album you’d blast at a party for sure.

EG: Are there any plans to present ‘Story Of The Fall’ in a live setting?

Matt Fax: There might be, at least I would love to at some point. Doing a live show is a pretty hard task, where you have to do much work beforehand. But I’d definitely love to do it!

EG: Now, stepping away from the studio for a bit…Have you found any good books, movies, or albums lately that you’d recommend?

Matt Fax: I’ve started reading ‘1984’ by George Orwell and still need to motivate myself to finish it, but it’s a classic book. As for an album, my latest addition was French rapper Ziak’s new album called ‘Chrome’. Disclosure’s new album is amazing as well.

EG: Can you share something personal with us only a few people know about?

Matt Fax: I hit dislike on my own tracks on YouTube.

EG: What’s next for Matt Fax? Where can your fans catch you next? What new milestones are you looking forward to in 2023?

Matt Fax: The rest of the year will be all about touring and promoting the album. I’ll be playing in Prague, Italy, Austin, Amsterdam to name a few, as well as ‘Dreamstate’ in November. People can check my socials to be up to date with all of the tour dates!

EG: Thank you for your time, Matt! We’re excited to see what’s in store for you. Take care!

Matt Fax: Thanks for having me!
