London-based duo Maribou State has just released their highly anticipated new single ‘Blackoak’  after a three-year hiatus.

The track combines intricate electronics, organic live instrumentation, and the distinctive vocals that have earned Maribou State a dedicated following over the years.

According to the duo, “The song was written during a difficult time for both of us and everyone else involved. Over the past few years, we had both struggled with our sense of selves and how connected we felt to our roots in Britain. With the world in a state of flux, this feeling of disillusionment only seemed to get worse. However, it also led us to explore all the things we loved about where we’re from: the musicians, from artists like David Bowie and The Beatles to The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers, and also the likes of Burial, Aphex Twin, and Sault. We also wanted to pay homage to all the electronic genres born in the UK, from Jungle to UK Garage and IDM, and the festivals that have made an impact, namely Glastonbury, the countryside, and English summers. With ‘Blackoak’, we tried to capture the spirit of all these things, and it unintentionally helped us reconcile some of our feelings of indifference. For us, it represents the peak of our musical journey so far.”

The release of ‘Blackoak’ follows an intense period of songwriting, with the duo going on makeshift writing retreats, building their own DIY studios at various secluded locations throughout the UK, and inviting friends and collaborators to join them.
