Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell have filed a joint lawsuit against Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, alleging that copyrighted musical works were illegally used to train its models.
According to the filing, the publishers are seeking up to $150,000 per work, along with up to $25,000 for each identifiable instance in which copyright management information was allegedly removed. The potential damages could reach several billion dollars if the claims succeed in court.
The complaint accuses Anthropic and founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann of “illegally torrenting, scraping, and downloading copyrighted works on a massive scale” to develop and operate Claude.
Among the works identified in the filing are compositions associated with Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Mariah Carey, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Anthropic is also facing a separate ongoing lawsuit involving Universal Music Publishing Group, Concord Music Group, and ABKCO Music.
