Thomas Bangalter has said he is “not really interested in the creative usage of artificial intelligence.”

The French musician discussed the subject during a conversation with Chanel Arts, Culture and Heritage President Yana Peel at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland. Recorded in June, the interview was shared through Chanel’s YouTube channel on July 29th, 2026.

Bangalter argued that the most meaningful part of creativity does not take place on an intellectual level.

“The most interesting part of the creative process is happening not at all on an intellectual level,” he said. “Where you’re actually going through a process which is about understanding your feelings.”

The conversation follows Bangalter’s surprise appearance at an art.klub no-phones party during Art Basel. He performed at the Messe Basel exhibition centre using a custom modular setup featuring drum machines and analog synthesisers.
