Thylacine returns with a new chapter in his nomadic discography, unveiling ‘ROADS Vol. 3’, written and recorded across Namibia during an extended journey in his converted Airstream caravan. The album is out now on Intuitive Records.
Blending electronica with ambient textures, traditional instrumentation, and field recordings, ‘ROADS Vol. 3’ captures the spirit of Namibia through the lens of a traveling composer. Recorded over several months in deserts, mountains, and villages, the French producer and multi-instrumentalist once again allowed the environment and its people to shape the music’s evolution.
Thylacine, known for his mobile studio work through the Trans-Siberian Railway, the Andes, and Turkey, maintains his immersive method with this release. In Namibia, he engaged deeply with local communities, learning instruments and recording voices, sounds, and stories that animate each track. ‘Dokido’, composed with a Himba group in Ozohere, draws from traditional chants used in dance battles.
Another standout is ‘Shark Island’, addressing the region’s dark past as a concentration camp during the Herero and Nama genocide. The track incorporates ancestral chants recorded in a German church with an amateur Nama choir. A documentary-style video by Cécile Chabert accompanies the piece. Other tracks like ‘Goodnight’ integrate nocturnal animal calls, while ‘Mafwe’ features a recording session with the Mafwe people.
