!K7 Music founder and CEO Horst Weidenmüller has passed away

Horst Weidenmüller, the founder and CEO of the independent music company !K7 Music, has died at the age of 60 following a serious illness. The news was shared today in a LinkedIn post.

In the statement, !K7 paid tribute to his influence, noting that his vision and commitment had shaped the company since its inception in 1985, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. We will honor his memory by upholding the values and work he was so passionate about.”

Beyond his leadership at !K7, Horst was a devoted advocate for the independent music scene. Serving as a long-time board member of both Merlin and the IMPALA Independent Music Companies Association, he played an important role in promoting and strengthening the independent sector worldwide. His contributions had a profound impact on the industry.

“!K7 remains committed to carrying forward his vision with the same dedication and integrity he exemplified.

“Rest in peace, Horst / Mick. You will be deeply missed. We kindly ask that his family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”

Founded in 1985, !K7 began as a music-video production company. In 1993, the company launched its DJ-Kicks mix series, following the success of earlier X-Mix albums. This eventually led to the release of DJ-Kicks: Kruder & Dorfmeister, as well as collaborations with influential artists like Michael Mayer, Nina Kraviz, Four Tet, DJ Koze, James Holden, Tiga, Maceo Plex, among many others.
