Known for crafting immersive atmospheres and driving grooves, Jabe launched his own event series, Kalao, in 2022. The project has already welcomed artists like Meera, Somma, and Fiona Kraft, helping shape the electronic scene in his hometown. At only 22, Jabe has played alongside international names including Shimza and is steadily carving out his place on the French circuit.
Now, with his latest deep house single ‘Over Again’ out via Non Merci Music—following February’s debut ‘Hunted’ with LOV—Jabe shares five tips from his creative process.
1. Consistency
I try to open Ableton every day, even if it’s just to create a simple 16 to 32 bar loop. This regular habit helps me stay creative. I don’t always build a full track from these loops, but I record them and revisit them a few days later. Over time, this approach keeps the creative process flowing and often leads to unexpected ideas.
2. Trust your ears
Since I don’t come from a traditional musical background, I rely heavily on my ears. Of course, there are rules in music production, but I prefer not to limit myself to them. If it sounds good to me, that’s what matters, you have to trust yourself. This mindset has helped me shape a sound and identity that truly reflect who I am.
3. Arrangement as a creative trigger
Once I’m happy with a loop and feel there’s nothing more to add, I start working on the arrangement. I usually focus first on building the key parts of the track, the main drop and the breakdown. This helps spark new ideas and gives me a solid foundation, making it easier to arrange the rest of the track around those moments.
4. Recording sounds from everyday life
It might not be the most conventional method, but I’ve been using more and more field recordings in my tracks. I find it makes the process more fun and spontaneous. I simply use my phone to capture sounds, whether I’m in the studio or in my daily life. It gives the track a more organic and alive feeling.
5. Stay away from social media
My advice is to avoid opening social media while you’re in the creative process. It breaks your focus and can make you question your work. Staying away from distractions helps you keep a clear vision of what you want to express.
