Long before international bookings and label releases, Mihai Popoviciu was building his world in isolation.

Growing up in Sibiu in the early ’90s, electronic music did not arrive easily. There were no clubs, no record stores, no local scene to plug into. What did exist came through fragments, taped recordings from German television, replayed until they became something personal.
That distance shaped everything that followed.
Today, from his home base in Cluj, Mihai still holds on to that same sense of focus. Away from the circuit, this is where things reset. Family, routine, and a dedicated studio space remain central to a career defined by consistency and control.
“I’m at home in Cluj. This is where I reset when I’m not touring. It keeps me grounded.”
His path into music did not begin behind decks. With no clubs around him, DJing was not an option. Production became the entry point, and quickly, an obsession.
“Once I realized I could actually build sounds myself, everything changed. It became a daily obsession.”
That discipline showed early. At one stage, he was finishing nearly one track per day, building a catalog through repetition and intent. It was only a matter of time before that work reached beyond Romania, with early support leading to releases on labels such as Poker Flat, Bedrock, Dessous, and his own Cyclic imprint.
What followed was not a sudden rise, but a steady expansion. From studio work to DJing, from local recognition to global stages, Mihai carried the same approach with him, measured, focused, and grounded in the idea that music should move people first.
At the center of that identity sits groove.
Not as decoration, but as structure. His productions avoid unnecessary turns, choosing instead to build momentum through subtle shifts and careful balance.
“I’m more interested in details that you feel rather than notice.”
This preference for what is felt rather than noticed is evident in his latest reinterpretation of Thaddeus X’s ‘Nassau.’ Attracted to the original’s atmosphere, Mihai saw an opportunity to sharpen its purpose for the club.
“The atmosphere grabbed me immediately. I felt I could take it into a more club-driven direction, with a stronger groove.”
Rather than rebuilding the track from scratch, Mihai focused on preserving its essence while adjusting its function. The result leans further into the dancefloor, while still holding onto the warmth and tension that defined the original.
It is a careful balance, one that reflects a broader evolution in his process.
Where earlier stages of his career were driven by speed and output, time has introduced patience. Tracks are no longer rushed toward completion. They are allowed to develop at their own pace.
“Good tracks need space. I’m not chasing the finish line anymore, I’m enjoying the process.”
This slower approach has helped him maintain a catalog that feels consistent without becoming repetitive. The changes are rarely dramatic, but they are always present.
“Evolution doesn’t have to be dramatic. It can be a series of small steps.”
Still, the modern environment brings its own pressures. Visibility is constant, comparison is unavoidable, and the temptation to chase quick validation is always there.
“Staying authentic in a world that constantly pushes you to compare yourself with others is the biggest challenge.”
For Mihai, the answer remains simple and demanding at the same time.
“Discipline beats inspiration. If you show up and work, ideas will come.”
Looking ahead, that same mindset is turning toward the technical side of his craft. Mixing and mastering are no longer just tools, but areas he wants to fully understand and control.
There is no rush in that pursuit. Just the same steady approach that has defined his path from the beginning.
And for Mihai Popoviciu, that has always been enough.
