One person has died, and 29 others were injured after a van drove into a crowd near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day celebrations on July 25th, 2026.
The attack occurred in Tiergarten Park, close to the Pride event and its closing celebrations at the Brandenburg Gate. Authorities subsequently ended the remaining program and asked visitors to leave the area.
Police identified the suspected driver as a 21-year-old German citizen with a history of Islamist extremist activity. He was killed during a police operation in Berlin’s Spandau district the following day after confronting officers with a sharp object. Authorities are treating the incident as an Islamist terror attack.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner described the violence as an attack on the city’s freedom and values, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for unity in response.
Memorial gatherings have since taken place near the Brandenburg Gate as Berlin’s LGBTQ+ community mourns the victim and those affected by the attack.
