“I wanted to capture that mesmerizing journey we go through when we go to a show and get lost in the groove of the music! I included a blend of indie dance, dark disco, and melodic techno, starting out mellow with an early sunset vibe and transitioning to a late-night feel, all within an hour. This mix features everything from breakbeat to fun and sultry vocals with soulful psychedelic undertones. I want listeners to sit back, relax, and let this podcast take you on a sonic adventure that will ignite your passion for electronic music and leave you craving more. Enjoy the ride!” – Layla Benitez
Layla Benitez, immersed in DJ booths practically since she could walk, embodies an artist in constant evolution. Her DJing and production reflect a dynamic growth with each gig and experience. In her August 2021 Boiler Room set, she unveils an 80s synth-influenced sound described as ‘indie dance meets dark disco,’ creating a neon bridge between her New York roots and her current Miami home. Delving into melodic techno and a laid-back, soulful groove, Layla seamlessly navigates within the same sonic aesthetic.
Her ascent in the last few years has been remarkable. Named the 2022 Future Star by DJ Mag, Layla has graced the stages of prominent events like Coachella, EXIT, Afterlife, Circoloco, Loveland, OFF Sonar, EDC, and many more. She has left her mark in iconic venues such as DC10, Pacha, Hï, Koko, and Nordstern, to name a few. Layla has also contributed to renowned labels like Crosstown Rebels and All Day I Dream, establishing her own imprint, Sheep At Night.
Layla’s journey into music began in her early teens, influenced by her father, NY house pioneer John ‘Jellybean’ Benitez. Memories of accompanying him to gigs from a young age laid the foundation for her lifelong connection with club culture. A pivotal moment in 2019 saw Layla, invited after a chance encounter in Ibiza, securing a residency at Sommer Klein in Alacati, Turkey, and playing at various underground parties across Europe.
The move to Miami marked a significant chapter, where Layla became a Space resident, opening for leading DJs worldwide. Her residency broadened her perspective and enhanced her skills as an artist and producer. Learning to adapt and match the energy of diverse artists while staying true to her style became a rewarding challenge.
The connection formed with dancefloors at Space and worldwide venues profoundly influences her productions. Layla’s understanding of different sounds and percussion that define genres, honed through DJing, contributes to her dynamic production style. Her desire to play globally and in front of diverse audiences fuels her artistic journey.
For Layla Benitez, it’s not just about what she wants to do; it’s about watching her turn those aspirations into reality.
