Miami’s DJ collective The Fates will be making her debut this Thursday at Barter Wynwood.
We sat down to chat with them about the music and future plans.
Electronic Groove: Who are The Fates?
The Fates: We are a female DJ collective composed of three unique women – Beki Powell, Darelectric & Mau- who came together from different latitudes to crystallize a legacy of music and creativity.
EG: Where does the name “The Fates” come from ?
The Fates: After being brought together in such a serendipitous manner, we found ourselves identifying with the Greek Goddesses of destiny – The Fates. For us, Fate is unexplained magic – points in time when stars align. The more we open ourselves to the hands of fate, the more stunning coincidences we can discover. Naturally, there is no greater vessel for this than the connective power of music – and of course, the unbreakable force of love and unity which binds us together.
“Our sound ranges from funk, soul and groove-rich house, to deep atmospheric techno”
EG: How would you describe your sound as DJ’s?
The Fates: Since we are so eclectic in musical backgrounds and cultural upbringings, our sound ranges from funk, soul and groove-rich house, to deep atmospheric techno.
We call Beki the “time traveler” because of her sensibility for old school flavour, as her musical collection spans all decades from 1970’s to present-day.
As for Darelectric – well, her name says it all. Electricity is present in all of her sound. Through deep layers of resonant, soul-engaging techno, she creates a space for her shape-shifting, inter-dimensional sound to be born. We call her “D’Owl” because her wisdom and sophistication are evident in her craft and vision.
Mau (or MauWow)’s sound is marked by hypnotic percussion and rolling baselines, as she “wows” us with her real-time deconstruction of sound in her sporty mixing style.
EG: What do you want to see change in the music industry?
The Fates: We hope to push the evolution of the music community to be more about quality and raw talent over brand names and ego-driven sentiments. We want to tear down the competitive status quo, aiming to build a community based on support. We lift one another up, we push each other to succeed. We give a chance to those humble talents who haven’t yet been recognized. Success is most enjoyed when shared, and we will always adhere to this belief.
“The Miami music scene is so diverse, featuring multicultural artists from all over the world who have merged here to create this wonderful, versatile platform for electronic music”
EG:What draws you to Miami, that made you want to build your legacy here?
The Fates: Miami is an incredibly underrated city. People always think of it as a commercial or tourist destination, because the tourist industry is so strong here. But the truth is, there is an incredible, culture-rich community of locals driven by the same desire for a community centered around quality, heart-felt music. The Miami music scene is so diverse, featuring multicultural artists from all over the world who have merged here to create this wonderful, versatile platform for electronic music. Local DJs do an amazing job at uplifting the community with incredible talent and music productions. The community is beautiful, and it’s only growing more and more. There are so many concentric circles of music-oriented people who haven’t yet intersected. We wanted to be in a city that hasn’t yet developed, so we could be part of that development. And it is truly an amazing experience.
