Planningtorock has released a new version of their 2011 single ‘The One’, reworked by Romy of The xx.
Out now via Human Level, the new interpretation slows the original arrangement into a more spacious and hypnotic direction, layering swirling synth textures beneath Romy’s understated vocal delivery. The collaboration builds on the longstanding friendship between both artists while reframing the emotional core of the original track for the dancefloor.
Reflecting on the release, Planningtorock explained that the original version of ‘The One’ was written during a period of loneliness before openly living as their trans self, adding that Romy’s rework brought “tenderness and hope” to the song’s queer longing. Romy described the collaboration as a natural extension of their shared experiences as queer artists and said she aimed to preserve the emotional weight of the original while reshaping it for club settings.
Romy recently previewed the remix during her Coachella DJ set, shortly after reuniting onstage with The xx for one of the group’s first performances together in eight years.
