Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker has unveiled his latest innovation: The Orchid, a sophisticated chord-generating synthesizer. This instrument, developed with Telepathic Instruments, realizes the artist’s decade-long vision of bridging the gap between professional and amateur musicians.
The Orchid’s core features an ingenious matrix system with eight chord-type selection and modification keys, paired with a single-octave keyboard for root note selection. It boasts a 16-voice polyphonic synth engine with ambient and modulation effects, along with a dedicated bass synth for rich low frequencies.
Telepathic Instruments co-founder Ignacio Germade designed The Orchid to blend retro-futuristic aesthetics with practical features, including stereo speakers, responsive keys, and a rechargeable battery. Professional capabilities extend to reverb, delay, looping, and MIDI output.
The Orchid launches December 18 at $549. Early adopters can join ‘The Garden,’ a Patreon community where users shape the instrument’s development through feedback.
This launch marks Parker’s latest venture into product development, following his collaboration with Parisian fashion house A.P.C. on a “psychedelic minimalism” clothing collection featuring premium pieces such as alpaca sweaters, corduroy trousers, and bucket hats.
