Victor Willis, cofounder and original lead singer of Village People, has died at the age of 74.
The group announced the news on Facebook today, July 1st, 2026, stating that Willis died on June 30th following a “short but aggressive illness.” They also requested privacy at this time.
Born in Dallas and raised in San Francisco, Willis cofounded Village People in 1977 alongside French producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo. As the group’s original frontman, he sang lead on many of their best-known tracks, including ‘YMCA’, ‘Macho Man’, ‘In The Navy’, and ‘Go West’.
Known for their theatrical costumes and connection to queer culture, Village People became one of disco’s defining crossover acts during the late ’70s. Their music has remained a fixture across clubs, sporting events, and popular culture.
